Product Description /Product Description
To enhance the quality and efficiency of converter steelmaking while reducing production costs, steelmakers must adopt the latest technological advances and process equipment. To this end, secondary‑gun control systems have been installed on converters at several modern steel plants both domestically and abroad. These systems enable the collection, during the blowing process and without tilting the converter, of multiple parameters from the molten bath using a composite probe mounted on the secondary gun. The measured parameters include molten‑steel temperature, carbon content, oxygen activity, molten‑steel level, and samples for laboratory analysis of the steel’s composition. These signals are fed to the process control computer, thereby providing the essential conditions for dynamic control of the converter‑blowing process. Basic concepts related to dynamic control of the converter using a composite probe are illustrated in the figure.
There are two main types of composite probes used on converter secondary lances: the TSC probe (for temperature measurement, sampling, and carbon determination) and the TSO probe (for temperature measurement, sampling, and oxygen determination).
The TSC probe, in addition to measuring the molten steel temperature, employs a dedicated thermocouple within its carbon‑measurement chamber to determine the steel’s solidification temperature and to extract a steel sample. Typically, about two minutes before the end of the blowing process, a secondary lance equipped with the TSC probe is inserted into the melt pool to rapidly measure both the pool temperature and the steel’s solidification temperature, while simultaneously sampling the steel for laboratory analysis. The data are then fed into the process computer; upon receiving these signals, the computer calculates the carbon content based on the relationship between solidification temperature and carbon level, enabling timely adjustments to the static blowing model. This brings the refining process closer to the target values for endpoint temperature and carbon content, achieving dynamic control and thereby improving the hit rate of converter steelmaking.
